Goodwill Message From Y.C. Maikyau, SAN To NBA, Calabar Branch On The Occasion Of Her 2022 Law Week

I am delighted for the opportunity to share goodwill with the entire NBA Calabar Branch (the Doyen Bar) on the auspicious occasion of her 2022 Law Week. I must particularly thank the Branch Chairman, Mr Attah Ochinke, and other members of the Executive Committee, as well as the Law week Planning Committee, for providing members with this unique opportunity for cross-fertilization of ideas, impactful learning, networking and relaxation.

The theme of this year’s Law Week – “WE, THE PEOPLE: An Agenda for National Consensus’’, is apt and timely, bearing in mind the current state of our nation. The various teething problems ailing our fledgling democracy: wide-spread insecurity, snail pace of infrastructural development, mass unemployment and poverty, may indeed be merely symptomatic of a more fundamental problem, which is the inability of the Nigerian people to set clear and workable terms in the social contract between ourselves and our elected representatives in Government. I earnestly look forward to the contributions of the various eminent speakers to the discussion, which I am certain will shed light on the theme and at the end of the day, propose a robust national consensus agenda, with particular recommendations on how the NBA, being the bastion of democracy and rule of law in Nigeria, can assist to ensure true democracy that will guarantee economic growth and the protection of the rights of the citizens.

The optimism being displayed by the Doyen Bar with the choice of this theme is, to me, an indication that there is yet hope for Nigeria. And I believe that at the end of the week, we will rise with workable recommendations that will restore our dear country on the path of progress.

I commend the Law Week Planning Committee for the planning and smooth execution of the programme, and I encourage all participants to take advantage of the array erudite resource persons invited to this law week to enrich their knowledge, for personal development and the betterment of our society
