NBA Kano Law Week 2022: How Y. C Maikyau, SAN Was Celebrated By Friends In Kano [PICTURES]

It was a hangout to remember. The Kano sun had set and the evening breeze had flooded everywhere, when lawyers from across the ancient city of Kano, the Centre of Commerce gathered at Alu Avenue to welcome and celebrate their friend, YC Maikyau, SAN.
The hangout was scheduled for 7:00 pm. But the venue was filled up already before the time. There were people everywhere, sitting, standing and chatting, waiting for the arrival of YC Maikyau.
A few minutes to 7:00 pm, we heard the trumpeter announce the entrance of YC Maikyau through the sound of his algaita, a special musical trumpet used for the members of the royal family.
‘Barka da zuwa Maikyau,’ the trumpet said, ‘you are welcome Maikyau.’ It then went ahead to sound different tones that captured the attention of people and made them face the direction of the trumpeter. And there he was, YC Maikyau with his entourage walking towards us.
From table to table, YC Maikyau went and greeted everyone, both seniors and juniors. I can still see the warm expression on their faces as they shook hands.
A few minutes after, the Koroso Dancers came in and danced with acrobatic moves.
‘So far, we’ve entertained you,’ one of the dancers said, it’s now your turn to entertain us.’ YC Maikyau accepted the gesture, stepped out, and together with friends, unbelievably danced the Koroso. His steps were right and his vibe was positive.
After, YC Maikyau was called upon and decorated with babanriga. People cheered as he was hailed: “the Maikyau of Kano”. And when the time came for YC to leave, people did not want him to go. They enjoyed his presence. He enjoyed theirs.
Despite the harsh reality of fuel scarcity, friends came out for YC Maikyau. Despite his long journey, YC Maikyau found time to be with his friends.
This reminds me of what a wise person once said:
“A friend is one who overlooks your broken fence and admires the flowers in your garden.”
