The Elections Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch (UNITY BAR) has declared Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Moses Alfred Ebute, new Chairman of the branch.
A Notice signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Committee, Pastor Emmanuel Oluwbiyi and Mimi Ayua respectively, revealed that Ebute was the only candidate who submitted his completed Nomination Form to the electoral Committee within the time stated in the Election Time-Table. He also met all the criteria set out in the Committee Notice Number 001 of Monday 6th December, 2021.”
The Learned Silk would therefore fill up the vacant position of the NBA Abuja Branch Chairman, thereby putting an end to the controversy surrounding that office.
TML reports that the immediate past Chairman of the branch, late Dr Hauwa Shekarau, lost her life to an undisclosed illness on the 15th of September, 2021, just months to the end of her tenure. Thereafter, there were calls on the branch to conduct elections to fill up the vacancy, by the Northern bloc of the branch which was Shekarau’s constituency and the platform which she used to win her election as Chairman.
When the election details were finally announced, the unanimous decision by the Northern bloc was in favour of Moses Ebute, SAN who magnanimously stepped down for Hauwa Shekarau before her election, hence his unopposed candidature.
A statement by the Publicity Secretary of the branch, Ikemefuna Onyeka sighted by The Metro Lawyer (TML) reveals that the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chairman of the branch will hold on Wednesday, 15th December, 2021 at the NBA Abuja Branch Secretariat, BLOCK 16, FLAT 2, FCDA QUARTERS, KASHIM IBRAHIM WAY, WUSE II, ABUJA.
