African Bar Association Condemns Non-Compliance By Member States Of Decisions Of ECOWAS Court

The President of the African Bar Association (AfBA), Mr Hannibal Uwaifo has condemned ECOWAS Member States that fail to comply with the judgments of the regional court and promised that the continental Association will lead the fight to ensure that its judgments are respected and enforced.
Speaking after presenting certificates to members of the Court’s delegation to the ongoing conference of the Association in Niamey, Niger, the President pledged that Association will partner with the Court in ensuring the realisation of this objective.
He described the Bar as the voice of the Bench and praised the five member delegation for the quality of their presentations on various aspects of the court during the five day conference and used the opportunity to present certificates of guest speaker and attendance to the delegation.
In his response, the Vice President of the Court, Honorable Justice Gberi-be Ouattara, who led the delegation, commended the Association for its offer to reinforce the efforts of the Court in improving on the level of enforcement of its decisions and praised the Association for hosting a successful conference.
He then presented two sets of the law reports of the court in English and French for the period 2004 to 2015 to the President on behalf of the Association.
The delegation of the Court to the conference also included the Chief Registrar, Mr Tony Anene-Maidoh, the Executive Assistants to the President and Vice Presidents of the Court, Mr Nketia Apraku and Mr. Fernand Kouassi, respectively as well as Mr Uche Nwoko of the Registry.
The delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Permanent Representative of ECOWAS to Niger, Madam Lialiane Alapini during which the Vice President, Honorable Justice Gberi-be Ouattara acknowledged with gratitude, the warm reception accorded them, especially for being at the airport to receive the delegation. He also commended the representative for attending Monday’s opening ceremony of the conference.
Responding, Madam Alapini said that in her role, she was required to serve the Commission, Community institutions and agencies and used the opportunity to conduct the delegation on a tour of the office.
