27 Rivers State Assembly Lawmakers Withdraw Impeachment Notice Against Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly resumed sitting today in Port Harcourt, the capital of the state.

The lawmakers, led by Martin Amaewhule, gathered at the House of Assembly quarters.

During the meeting, the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, read out a letter signed by 27 members of the House with one of them being absent due to hospitalization. The letter announced the withdrawal of the impeachment notice against Fubara as part of a conflict resolution process initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Following a conflict between Wike and his successor, Fubara, the oil-rich state found itself in a precarious situation.

President Bola Tinubu met with the warring parties along with Dr. Peter Odili, the former governor of the state, as part of efforts to mend the rift.

A truce was mediated at Abuja’s Aso Villa.

Due to the feud between Wike and Fubara, 27 members of the House defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is in power and whose central government Wike currently holds a ministerial position.

Parallel sittings, an impeachment plan against the governor, the demolition of the Assembly facility, and a flood of resignations from pro-Wike commissioners in Fubara’s cabinet were all part of the rivalry.

Earlier in October, the President and other elder statesmen intervened in the dispute, but it quickly deteriorated into a full-fledged fight.

It remains to be seen whether the governor will keep to his end of the bargain.
