2023: No Law Governs The Appointment Of DG Of Campaign In Nigeria- Ajulo
A renowned constitutional lawyer and former National Secretary of the Labour Party, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, has said that no law in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria gives directive on how to appoint the Director-General of a political campaign.
The lawyer made this statement following the reactions that trailed the appointment of a former Political Adviser in Ch. Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration and former Director of the PDP Presidential Campaign in 2011, Mr. Akin Osuntokun, as the new Director-General of OBIDATTI 2003 Presidential Campaign Council to replace Dr. Doyin Okupe, on Friday, in Abuja.
Some reports had emanated, claiming that the newly appointed Mr. Osuntokun is also a Senatorial Candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, in Ekiti State.
However, the National Chairman and Presidential Candidate of the ZLP, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, in a statement, had debunked the rumour, saying. Mr. Osuntokun has resigned from the party since August 2022 and is no longer a member of their Party.
He said the Senatorial Candidate ticket held by Mr Osuntokun could no longer be replaced with another name as at the time of his resignation because the window allowed by the Electoral Act for substitution of name had elapsed.
Ajulo, while corroborating Mr. Nwanyanwu, said “the position of Director- General of any campaign platform in Nigerian is simply a political appointment and what’s basically required is trust and competence.”
